WM88 Is the Perfect Alloy for the Food Service Industry
Machining parts for the food service industry comes with its own unique set of challenges. Due to factors like strict regulations and the potential for contamination, manufacturers must practice the utmost care and vigilance. Material selection in particular is a critical consideration.
One of Arbiser Machine’s favorite materials for these parts is WM88, the corrosion-resistant, anti-galling alloy developed by Waukesha Foundry Inc. We use this material regularly when we machine food service parts at our machine shop in Georgia.
What Is WM88?
WM88 is a soft, nickel-based alloy known for its high strength and exceptional corrosion-resistance. It can withstand temperatures up to 500 degrees Fahrenheit. Due to its inherent softness, WM88 is ideal for applications where metal parts must slide against one another without lubrication.
Quick facts about WM88:
Tensile strength: 48,000 psi
Yield: 38,000 psi
Hardness: 140 on the Brinell Hardness Scale
Specification: ASTM A494 CY5SnBiM
FDA approved for contact with food
Common Applications for WM88
WM88 is a great choice for applications requiring frequent cleaning and sterilization, as well as applications where lubrication is prohibited. Industries like food services, pharmaceuticals, and defense benefit greatly from this alloy.
Lubrication isn’t an option for many food services applications because it can potentially cause contamination. If a metal part will rub against another metal part in its end-use application, WM88’s properties can prevent issues like corrosion, seizing, or galling.
These properties also make WM88 a great choice for applications where bearings—typically used to reduce friction between metal parts—aren’t an option either. Surely there are other exciting possibilities for this alloy that we haven’t even encountered yet!
Selecting Materials for Food Service Applications
At Arbiser Machine, selecting materials for the food service industry always begins with understanding the part’s end-use application. We may recommend other food-safe materials like 304 stainless steel, 316 stainless steel, aluminum, or even a plastic like PEEK that can withstand high temperatures without degrading.
Fortunately, WM88 is just as easy to machine as stainless steel, so if this alloy is the best choice for your part, we’ll have no problems working with it at our machine shop in Georgia. Request a quote for your next part today!
